FamilyGames is a community building strategy from the Global Community Games (GCG) network. It uses sports, family challenges and games to build community and share positive values.
FamilyGames developed out of the KidsGames strategy. This was a response to a growing appreciation of the family context that children live in. Children are born into, and raised in families. This relationship structure of children with their parents, and extended families is a vital part of every child’s life, even more so when it is missing.
FamilyGames attempts to bring families together (or initiate family relationships) at a fun event that is formed and supported by volunteers from many organisations and groups. Families play, talk, challenge and compete together. This strengthens communication and helps them tackle some key issues of family life (as outlined in the FamilyGames curriculum). A well run program gives the adults in a family the freedom to participate alongside their children and other relatives.
