About FamilyGames

FamilyGames is a worldwide strategic movement serving the family in the areas of values, faith and communications through sports, games, the Bible, creativity and fun all integrated into an easy-to-run initiative. Families can be served through this strategy around the world, across a city, village, region or neighbourhood. Churches, schools, companies, community groups, sports and social organizations can easily and effectively run FamilyGames.

FamilyGames is a good first step to serving local families or initiating "Family relationships" in communities lacking in supportive, nurturing structures for children, teens, and adults of all ages.

FamilyGames is also a great strategy to reach families in the community who would like an opportunity to 'play' together. A well thought strategy of follow-up and integration is a key to building on the success of a FamilyGames event.

FamilyGames can be run as an activity to follow a KidsGames or TeenGames. It can also be held as a stand-alone event at a time during the year that suits your community. You can run it during a major Sports event that is of interest in your community, or at another time of year when you think families are most likely to participate.

Expect every FamilyGames to be different in all sorts of ways. There are many different FamilyGames that are held around the world. Organised activities will depend on your culture, your sporting interests, as well as the facilities and resources available. The structure can be a single day or a series of days where families meet together to enjoy time together and learn more about one another.

People don't need to make part of a family to participate. People can be formed into a new family to compete with other families, build new relationships and start to have fun together.

  • supporting parents and other family leaders
  • giving families some strong foundations to build into their lives

FamilyGames uses experiential learning and games as a tool to speak about values. It may be shaped like an international sports festival with: Family March-In Parade, Torch Lighting, Athletes Pledge, Opening & Closing Ceremony of dance, drama, music, press corps, World Water Bucket Championship, one or more compassion projects, awards ceremony, putting out the Torch and declaring the FamilyGames closed.

The program can be adapted to different to how many hours or days are able and news ideas are always welcome to add into this strategy to improve the way of reaching families.

Just like all the GCG strategies, FamilyGames are encouraged to select a Compassion Project that gives families an opportunity to engage with a problem outside their family and help to be part of the solution. This compassion and care for others will have a huge impact on the city or village where FamilyGames runs.
All FamilyGames are encouraged to include and expand the involvement of people with learning and physical disabilities. These people are part of a family as well, and many families with disabled members are often excluded from public events by lack of access, facilities or consideration. A manual directed towards children with disabilities is available, and can certainly be used to help a FamilyGames team think over what they can do to be "disabled friendly".
FamilyGames is free and can be run with very few or no resources, this immediately makes it easier to share. People do share FamilyGames, inviting friends from other countries to see their program and take the ideas back to their own country to try. Training is available. Volunteers have translated the curriculum files and training manuals into their language to use. All of these resources are easily accessible online. FamilyGames is flexible, engaging, meaningful and successful. That is how FamilyGames has spread around the world.
A facilitation team of 30-35 multi-denominational/multi-church and agency leaders develop and share ideas with over 20 work groups. FamilyGames is now a focus of the team, to increase the amount and variety of programming and curriculum available on this site.

Getting FamilyGames started

Get started by downloading the FamilyGames Manual. It will give you lots of helpful information about how to start a FamilyGames.
FamilyGames can be as small as 5 families or can involve many families. FamilyGames are designed to be run with several groups working together, but the size and number of participants is up to what the organising team can manage. Many cities that want to involve large numbers of families have found that it is best to run many small FamilyGames across a city.
FamilyGames go for 1- 5 days, as it is long enough for the families to make new friends and get to know each other better. Some groups do it 5 days in a row or once a week for 5weeks. It is up to you to decide what is best.
FamilyGames is a free program. It costs nothing to be involved or download the manuals, songs, videos and graphics. The program you run should be either free for the families or very low cost to enable as many families to participate as possible. It is against the Global Community Games Guidelines for FamilyGames to make a profit.
Most places do FamilyGames once a year or every two years. It is good to keep it as a special event. If you run the program around the time of major global sporting events that the families are interested in, then your FamilyGames will benefit from the excitement of those events.
You can use the Global Community Games training materials. Make sure that your team complies with the legal requirements in your country for child protection training and running an event that reduces unnecessary risks to participants and leaders.

FamilyGames and Sport

Involve athletes or sports people from your area who could share their family story sometime during the FamilyGames program.
Sport is a universal activity that draws countries and people together in a unique way. This is particularly seen in the large global Sports events, like the Olympic Games or the World Cup of Football. FamilyGames is a sports event that makes families the heroes and the celebrities.

FamilyGames involves sports and games in three ways:

  • Competitive Sports for those families that enjoy competing to win in their chosen sport. FamilyGames provides an opportunity for play and for coaching these skills.
  • Experiential Games are specially designed games that teach a lesson linked to the values and Biblical message of the day.
  • Fun Games provide a time to have fun, play and enjoy being together.

The sports and games are demonstrated in the Opening Ceremony with the competition played in the days or weeks following. The finals are played in the Closing Ceremony with awards given to all participants (not just the winners).

The World Water Bucket Championship (WWBC) was the very first KidsGames World Championship Event. The WWBC gives every FamilyGames the opportunity to take part in a world championship. Every multi-denominational/multi-church FamilyGames is invited to compete for the gold, silver, or bronze world title. To qualify, a FamilyGames must have a minimum number (5) participants from different churches, businesses or community groups on its team. The WWBC was first used in a Kenya KidsGames.

Each of the Global Community Games ("GCG" programs are KidsGames, TeenGames, FamilyGames and EdgeGames) have been developed for the good of all those that get involved with the GCG movement.

GCG has spread around the world due to a unique partnership of volunteers and voluntary organizations that have shared their time and expertise. This creates a unique and humble approach to working together both internationally and at a local level. It is about a body working together for the good of children, teens, families and whole communities.

Before you begin planning, read and understand the principles and guidelines that have built GCG into an initiative that has spread across the globe.

Yes. All the logos, graphics, mascots and images have been created freely for the use of groups participating in the GCG movement. As such, if you are using the materials as they are designed to be used, you are free to use any resource on this website to help you in your program. You may create local materials, print brochures, etc using the logos and trademarks. None of these materials may be used for any profit, except for the limited reason of raising funds to put the program on. Any monies left over from this exercise must be put back into running the program or given to someone else to run a GCG program.

To protect GCG from misuse, all the designs, logos and information of GCG are protected under international copyright conventions from people and organizations seeking to work against the principles of sharing and partnership that are the foundation of GCG.

Yes, you can build your own free simple site for your Community or Event. Sites can be set up and managed from City Sites.
Yes, Communities and Events can link to external websites. You can set one up and manage it from City Sites. It will be checked to make sure it complies with the GCG community Guidleines.

Yes, if your website, organization and its content is reputable, child-friendly and fits the guidelines of the GCG movement you may put a link to any of the GCG sites on your website as long as you use the wording noted below. If you wish to vary the wording you must get permission from the GCG Admin WorkGroup info@globalcommunitygames.com. You may use the logos of GCG alongside the wording below. No other images, resources, documents, photos, videos, or anything else on the GCG sites may be used without express written permission from the GCG Admin WorkGroup.

Yes, no one should create email addresses, bank accounts or organizations using the GCG names (KidsGames, TeenGames, EdgeGames or FamilyGames).

All local financial aspects of GCG (entrance fees, sponsorship, etc.) are the responsibility of each local community and local partners. This responsibility comes with the clear understanding that GCG is a non-exclusive project and can't be used (or even thought to be used) to profit anyone or any organization but is solely to cover expenses, and not to exclude anyone.

If a local facilitator is to be paid (specifically by a local organization to help with GCG) they are still responsible to and assisting the local partnership and do not own or control GCG. All organizations, churches and groups must equally feel that are part of, and equally guide GCG in that area.

As "KidsGames", "TeenGames", "FamilyGames", "EdgeGames" or even "Global Community Games" is not an organization anywhere in the world - any financial transactions must be performed by and through local partner churches, groups or organizations. NOTE - If no partner organization will facilitate GCG finances and a structure needs to be set up, use a descriptive name (like "Sydney Kids Committee") and not use any of the GCG names (like "KidsGames") in the name. In this way, for example, the "Sydney Kids Committee" organization then does KidsGames.

Putting together a Global Community Games may involve a change in how we think about structure, leadership and managing a project. It requires operating like a body, rather than as an organization. Outlined below are the key principles which help us all think about how to run Global Community Games effectively at a local level.

Consider how the following principles impact how you would run a Global Community Games in your city. These are the same principles that facilitate Global Community Games internationally:

  1. No one exclusively owns Global Community Games, GCG is available for everyone to use.
  2. No person, organization or church is more important than any other in Global Community Games .
  3. No one organization owns or controls Global Community Games in any city or country.
  4. Global Community Games is not an organization – it is a body, a partnership, a movement.
  5. Global Community Games is led by "facilitators" rather than "coordinators".
  6. Global Community Games seeks to empower children and local leaders at a "grass roots" level to create a long term ongoing and sustainable ministry.
  7. No one in Global Community Games has a title that excludes others from doing what they want to do too.
  8. No one group has exclusivity on doing a Global Community Games in any city or country.
  9. Global Community Games has as little structure as possible – it exists to build the local church and not Global Community Games itself.
  10. Resources in Global Community Games are given freely and consequently information and ideas are shared freely in return.
  11. Roles in Global Community Games are based on passions, giftedness and servant hood - not seniority, title or prestige.
  12. Global Community Games is a long-term process rather than a one-time event.
  13. Athletes and celebrities are not necessary for a Global Community Games. If they are interested in being involved, Global Community Games gives them an opportunity to share their abilities, passions and influence.
  14. Global Community Games is registered and trademarked to prevent it being used for commercial purposes.

The Local Organizing committee (you) are responsible for use of the KidsGames, TeenGames, EdgeGames and FamilyGames materials. The curriculum and manuals for you to put on a KidsGames, TeenGames, EdgeGames and FamilyGames are provided as a gift to all users. You are taking all responsibilities and legal responsibilities for any liability, obligation, duty, breach, damage, and cause of action, which may now or in the future arise in connection with User's use of KidsGames, TeenGames, EdgeGames or FamilyGames Materials. This includes you as User assumes full and complete responsibility and liability for User's own use of the KidsGames, TeenGames, EdgeGames and FamilyGames Materials, and the use of the KidsGames, TeenGames, EdgeGames and FamilyGames Materials by any third parties whose connection to the KidsGames, TeenGames, EdgeGames and FamilyGames Materials is through User. User shall indemnify and hold resource providers harmless from and against any and all claims, actions, damages and liabilities arising out of the User's use or implementation of the KidsGames, TeenGames, EdgeGames and FamilyGames Materials, including, but not limited to claims by or against User, its members, officers and leaders and any of the participants, employees and volunteers of any activity which utilizes KidsGames, TeenGames, EdgeGames and FamilyGames Materials.

All Global Community Games materials are available to be translated into other languages. All translations are done on the basis that they are freely shared to others via the Global Community Games website (www.kidsgames.com).

You may take any Global Community Games manual and translate it as long as you follow these guidelines:

  1. All translations remain the property of the Global Community Games partnership and may be freely shared under the same stipulations as the original manuals.
  2. An electronic copy of all completed translations must be provided to Global Community Games and sent via email to translations@kidsgames.com or posted to Global Community Games Translations (PO Box 809 Hornsby NSW 1630 Sydney Australia).
  3. The Global Community Games website will always have the most up to date version of any particular manual. Check there first.
  4. Check the Global Community Games website to see whether the material already has been translated.
  5. Check other manuals that have been translated into the same language for terms and names that have been used to remain consistent.
  6. Translations need to maintain the meaning of the words in the manuals. Nothing may be changed to alter the original intention of the manuals.
  7. If possible translate from the English into your language.
  8. If possible lay out the translated manuals to look as much like the original as you can.
  9. Use the most readable and accessible form of your language.
